Pulmonary Function Testing

What Should I Expect During a PFT?

Pulmonary function testing is non-invasive and does not require needles or surgery.

During the test, you will breathe into a specialized device called a spirometer. A respiratory professional will guide you through each part of the test and provide instructions on when to breathe normally, take a deep breath, or breathe out forcefully.

Depending on the type of PFT ordered, testing may take approximately 30–60 minutes.

Your healthcare professional will explain each step and help you perform the tests correctly.
